For the first time in 2026, a European initiative is putting the spotlight on the PhD. European Doctoral Day is a joint initiative of European networks involved in doctoral education and its promotion.
Across Europe, where science and research are fundamental values, May 13th is now celebrated as European Doctoral Day. This day is intended to highlight the vital role of doctoral education. Indeed, PhD graduates are key drivers of innovation and play a part in disseminating knowledge. During these events, we will have the opportunity to appreciate the diversity of their contributions. For doctoral research lies at the heart of our societies and plays a vital role in helping society adapt to a rapidly changing world, as well as in shaping Europe’s scientific, economic, industrial, technological and democratic future.
European Doctoral Day is designed to:
Inspire European and international students to pursue doctoral education,
Increase employers’ awareness and recognition of doctoral qualifications,
Showcase the diverse career paths and societal contributions of doctoral graduates.

In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, this event aims to promote doctoral studies and highlight the achievements of PhD graduates, with a view to encouraging future generations to pursue higher education. These days provides an opportunity to showcase the diversity of professional careers and the role of PhD students in our societies. It will enable PhD students to share their experiences with a diverse audience and to foster European scientific collaboration.
