PhD : skills expected on the job market
Since 2019, the PhD has been listed in the National Registry of professional Certifications (RNCP), which lists all diplomas recognised in France and issued by the State. This is a public database, in which each diploma has its own file containing information such as the skills acquired during the training.
As part of the registration of the PhD in the RNCP, 22 records relating to the PhD (classified by sector of activity) are accessible.
Each record provides a reference framework listing the skills expected on the job market (academic or extra-academic) after a PhD. However, as the skills associated with a PhD are transferable to all sectors, they are identical from one file to the next.
To access one of the RNCP records for the PhD, type “Doctorat” in the search engine of the RNCP.
This reference system can help you to orient your professional project and your Individual Training Plan (PIF)
NEW ON YOUR ADUM PERSONAL AREA (career section): A tool to help you acquire and evaluate your degree of acquisition of the RNCP competence expected after the PhD!
This tool will accompany you throughout your PhD and beyond.
Objectives: it will help you to :
- identify and optimise your skills and abilities to enable you to make the most of the professional experience that is the PhD;
- develop and adjust your professional project in a relevant way;
- identify and select the training and actions necessary to achieve your objectives in the context of your career plan;
- set accessible work goals to keep you motivated.
The tool includes a link to the doctoral training courses in the catalogue to link them to the doctoral skills acquisition process.
On the other hand, with the help of the guide provided by your Doctoral School on the tool, it will allow you to estimate your degree of practice and acquisition of each of the skills listed (RNCP skills and soft skills), by illustrating them :
- either by examples of acquisition frameworks from your research training ;
- or by examples of other situations and acquisition frameworks complementary to your research experience (training courses, associative
or civic commitment, scientific culture actions, etc.).
Eventually, this tool will help you to self-assess your degree of acquisition of the skills listed as specific to the PhD by the RNCP, by identifying and contextualising them. This approach will allow you to put them forward for your future jobs.
For this, it is important to position yourself in a dynamic approach.
Training sessions on the use of the tool are scheduled as part of the cross-cutting training catalogue
